Leading shares of basmati rice exporters — LT Foods, KRBL, and Chaman Lal Setia Exports — remained in focus on Tuesday (January 13) after US President Donald Trump announced 25% tariff on any country trading with Iran.

“Effective immediately, any country that does business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will face a 25% tariff on all trade with the United States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that the order is “final and conclusive."

This comes amid the rising tensions over Iran’s internal crackdown on protests and comes amid warnings of possible military action, including air strikes.The move, which takes immediate effect, is expected to heighten concerns among Indian exporters, given Iran’s significant role as a key buyer of Indian basmati rice.Iran is one of the largest importers of Indian basmati rice, both in terms of volume and value. Exporters such as KRBL, LT Foods, and Chaman Lal Setia have traditionally had meaningful exposure to the West Asian market, including Iran, making them particularly sensitive to geopolitical developments and shifts in trade policy involving the region.

The newly announced tariff has raised concerns about potential trade disruptions and indirect effects on Indian exporters, particularly if the move influences global trade dynamics or triggers retaliatory measures.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that air strikes remained one of the "many, many options on the table."

The diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran reportedly remains open, with a special envoy from the Trump administration noting a softer tone from Tehran behind closed doors.
