Muted Q4 for banks as NIMs squeeze and tepid loan growth to hit earnings. 4 things to watch out for

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Banks are expected to report yet another muted quarter, with Q4FY25 earnings taking a hit due to slower-than-expected loan growth and pressure on net interest margins. While the 25 bps rate cut in the February monetary policy by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to show its impact, another 25 bps cut announced on Wednesday could cause further setbacks going forward. The earnings season kicked off on Thursday with the announcement of the January–March quarter results by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Banks will begin their earnings announcements with HDFC Bank, scheduled to declare its results on April 19. While banks and financials have shown more resilience than other sectors over the past three months, and private banks have outperformed PSU banks, the investment strategy, according to InCred, should remain “selective and tactical.” Kotak Mahindra Bank and ICICI Bank are standout stocks that have delivered positive returns o...

[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Shares of PSU bank stocks like UCO Bank and Central Bank of India rallied up to 8% on Wednesday as a three-day meeting of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)'s rate-setting panel began today in which brokerages expect Governor Shaktikanta Das to cut cash reserve ratio (CRR). Global brokerage firm Citi said that if the CRR is cut by 50 basis points, the biggest NII (net interest income) benefit would be for PSU banks like PNB, SBI and Bank of Baroda. Within private banks, it said lenders like Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank will gain. Nifty PSU Bank index was up around 1% with UCO Bank leading the upside with an 8% rally. Central Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, and Punjab & Sind Bank were up about 5-6% each. Among private banks, HDFC Bank was up around 2% and was one of the biggest gainers in Nifty and Sensex. In the RBI MPC meeting, the decision of which would be announced on December 6, a rate cut is not expected but the central b...

PSU bank stocks to buy: Will the outperformance continue? Understanding risks a must. 13 PSU banks, 7 with an upside potential of up to 37%

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Synopsis Which is the sector where there is, literally, no small-cap company? The answer: PSU banks. In terms of market cap, none of the banks fall in the small-cap category. But yes, there are small PSU banks – those with a smaller loan book size than others. For a majority of the investors and traders, however, a bank whose stock price is below Rs. 50 may appear to be a small-cap – though it is not. So, when looking at banks – or for that matter any stock – make a distinction between the absolute price of the stock and its market cap. Now, the question: Should you buy stocks of PSU banks that have seen relative outperformance in this phase of correction? The question is relevant as the risk of overall market connection is still high. The last fortnight has seen a clear divergence in the performance of the banking space and rest of the market. PSU banks have either been able to keep their heads above water, or even move upward. Is this b...

PSU banks' Q1 results decent, but are valuations supportive of next leg of the rally?

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Despite a decent Q1 performance, PSU bank stocks have struggled over the past month, falling nearly 6% (as of August 13), with concerns over valuations in the overall PSU sector weighing on the market. Experts ETMarkets spoke to anticipate stock-specific action rather than a runaway rally. Here’s why! Barring State Bank of India (SBI), which reported a 1% year-on-year (YoY) increase in its June quarter net profit, all other public lenders have posted double-digit growth. Notable gains include Punjab National Bank (PNB) with a 159% YoY increase, Uco Bank with a 147% YoY rise, and Central Bank of India (CBI) with a 111% YoY growth. The remaining banks have shown growth between 10% and 47%. Five banks reported double-digit growth in net interest income (NII): Punjab & Sind Bank (PSB), Bank of Maharashtra, UCO Bank, Central Bank of India (CBI), and Punjab National Bank (PNB). PSB led with a 23% year-on-year increase, followed by 20%, 12%,...
