The December series opened on a strong note, with the Nifty ending a 14-month wait to hit a fresh lifetime high of 26,310.45 on Thursday. Investors are hopeful that the momentum will sustain through the month, buoyed by December’s favourable seasonality. Nifty has closed higher 60% of the time over the past decade. Over the past decade, Nifty has delivered average returns of 1.6% in December, a typically lighter month as global markets slow down ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays. Notwithstanding this, the trends for foreign and domestic flows have largely been positive. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net buyers in 6 out of 10 instances, putting money on the table during the same period. As for domestic institutional investors (DIIs), the strike rate was even better, as they pumped money on seven occasions in the past 10 Decembers.
