LIC refutes claims of 'favouritism' by government

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Mumbai: State-run Life Insurance Corp (LIC) Friday refuted US claims of 'special treatment' from the Indian government and regulators, concessions that Washington said helped it secure business from ordinary citizens at the expense of privately-run insurers. In its response to 'favouritism' claims by the US Trade Representative (USTR), LIC also said it operates in a competitive market alongside other insurers in an industry that has witnessed phased deregulation through this millennium. "LIC wishes to clarify that LIC is treated like any other insurance company by the government and regulators. The guarantee-provided at the time of its establishment in 1956-is a statutory provision designed to build public confidence in the early years of nationalisation," the insurer said. "It has never been invoked or used as a marketing tool or provided any undue advantage to LIC." Siddhartha Mohanty, MD & CEO, s...

FY25 PSU stock performance worst in 3 years as 73% scrips fall up to 48%. Just 1 multibagger shines

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] PSU stocks will end FY25 on a lackluster note, recording their worst performance of the past three financial years. Nearly 73% or 46 stocks out of 63 analysed by ETMarkets have witnessed a decline of up to 48% so far, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders stands tall as the only multibagger in the pack. With just 7 more trading sessions to go, the 63-stock BSE PSU index was down nearly 8% as on Wednesday versus 2.4% gains seen in the BSE Sensex in the same period. The correction over the last six months has taken some sheen out of the PSU counters. However, their rise over two-and-half years prior to October has been so prolific that the 2-year and 3-year returns of the BSE PSU index are still at 82% and 104%, respectively. "Over the past two years, PSU stocks have delivered an impressive rally, driven by the government’s aggressive capex push and structural reforms. The BSE PSU Index surged over 80% from 2022 to early 2024, with sectors lik...

IDBI Bank shares rise 7% after RBI submits 'Fit & Proper' report

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Shares of IDBI Bank rose 7% to Rs 94 in Thursday's trade on BSE after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reportedly given its 'fit and proper' approval on bidders for the Bank ahead of the Union Budget 2024. IDBI Bank has been up for privatisation for several years, and the govt had been awaiting an RBI’s assessment on bidders meeting the “fit and proper” norms — or are compliant with regulations and are not under the scanner of other regulators — to move to the next stage of the process. The central bank has given its report on all but one bidder which happens to be a foreign participant, which did not share information and the overseas regulator too has not provided data, ToI on Thursday reported. With the current market cap nearing Rs 95,000 crore, the Centre could potentially realize around Rs 29,000 crore from the disinvestment. However, several observers have noted that the transaction terms are not very attractive. The...

Insurers likely to report robust growth amid market tailwinds

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Listed private life insurers are set to report strong annualised premium equivalent growth, driven by a lower base and buoyant equity markets. However, the value of new business (VNB) margins will be muted due to increased sales of unit-linked insurance plans and pressure on group term pricing. General insurance companies are expected to show improved profitability, benefiting from a low claims ratio amid strong growth in motor, health, and commercial lines. Life insurers will adjust to new surrender value regulations this year, compressing their VNB margins in the second half of fiscal year. The life insurance industry experienced muted growth in Q1FY24 due to a surge in high-value non-par policy sales in the preceding quarter before the change in taxation policies. From April 2023, the government removed tax benefits from all non-par policies with aggregate premiums of ₹5 lakh and above per year. Insurers are likely to report APE growth...
