[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] The world’s top 10 richest billionaires saw their combined net worth rise by $135 billion on Wednesday, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, after US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on his proposed tariff hikes for most countries. “I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE,” Trump said, acknowledging over 75 countries that are currently negotiating trade terms and have not retaliated against his recent tariff escalations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent later clarified that while the US would pause its ‘reciprocal’ tariffs on key trading partners, a 10% blanket duty on nearly all imports would remain in effect. Existing tariffs on autos, steel, and aluminium also continue unchanged. However, Trump said he would raise duties on Chinese imports to 125% from the 104% level imposed earlier this week. The move sent Wall Street's "Magnificent Seven" stocks surging again and tacking on more than $1.5 trillion in m...

Dow ends above 40,000 milestone, indexes notch up weekly gains

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] The Dow Jones industrial average closed above the 40,000 mark for the first time on Friday, with other major indexes also scoring weekly gains, as data supported expectations for interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year. The benchmark S&P 500 edged higher after paring losses while the Nasdaq fell, but both chalked up a fourth straight week of gains. The Dow rose to end the fifth week of advances in a row. Strong corporate results and inflation and other economic data have bolstered investor hopes for Fed rate cuts this year. Eight out of the 11 S&P 500 sectors advanced, with energy leading gains while technology was the biggest loser. For the week, Dow gained 1.24%, S&P 500 rose 1.54%, and Nasdaq climbed 2.11%. "Today is a bit of a digestion day: we just broke out through record highs and now we're on a fourth straight week of gains, and the market appears to take a breaker," said Keith Lerner, co-ch...

Wall Street boasts record closes as inflation data fuels rate-cut bets

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Wall Street's three major indexes notched record closes on Wednesday with the benchmark S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both advancing more than 1%, after a smaller-than-expected rise in consumer inflation bolstered investors' hopes for interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. All three indexes hit intraday record highs with technology stocks leading the charge. The blue-chip Dow drew closer to the 40,000 milestone. Tepid U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for April fueled optimism that inflation was easing after three months of higher-than-expected numbers. This led traders to raise bets that the Fed will cut its policy rate in September and December. "It's a relief we didn't have a fourth hot CPI report," said Carol Schleif, chief investment officer at the BMO family office in Minneapolis. "Clearly markets liked that the inflation numbers looked softer. Retail sales came in softer. It's pretty clear ev...
