Warren Buffett's best and worst investments in his 60 years leading Berkshire Hathaway

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said Saturday that he wants to step down as chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of the year. The revelation came as a surprise because the 94-year-old had previously said he did not plan to retire. Buffett, one of the world's richest people and most accomplished investors, took control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965 when it was a textiles manufacturer. He turned the company into a conglomerate by finding other businesses and stocks to buy that were selling for less than they were worth. His success made him a Wall Street icon. It also earned him the nickname "Oracle of Omaha," a reference to the Nebraska city where Buffett was born and chose to live and work. Here are some of his best and worst investments over the years: Buffett's Best - National Indemnity and National Fire & Marine: Purchased in 1967, the company was one of Buffett's first insurance investments...

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Mumbai: State-run Life Insurance Corp (LIC) Friday refuted US claims of 'special treatment' from the Indian government and regulators, concessions that Washington said helped it secure business from ordinary citizens at the expense of privately-run insurers. In its response to 'favouritism' claims by the US Trade Representative (USTR), LIC also said it operates in a competitive market alongside other insurers in an industry that has witnessed phased deregulation through this millennium. "LIC wishes to clarify that LIC is treated like any other insurance company by the government and regulators. The guarantee-provided at the time of its establishment in 1956-is a statutory provision designed to build public confidence in the early years of nationalisation," the insurer said. "It has never been invoked or used as a marketing tool or provided any undue advantage to LIC." Siddhartha Mohanty, MD & CEO, s...

Insurers likely to report robust growth amid market tailwinds

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Listed private life insurers are set to report strong annualised premium equivalent growth, driven by a lower base and buoyant equity markets. However, the value of new business (VNB) margins will be muted due to increased sales of unit-linked insurance plans and pressure on group term pricing. General insurance companies are expected to show improved profitability, benefiting from a low claims ratio amid strong growth in motor, health, and commercial lines. Life insurers will adjust to new surrender value regulations this year, compressing their VNB margins in the second half of fiscal year. The life insurance industry experienced muted growth in Q1FY24 due to a surge in high-value non-par policy sales in the preceding quarter before the change in taxation policies. From April 2023, the government removed tax benefits from all non-par policies with aggregate premiums of ₹5 lakh and above per year. Insurers are likely to report APE growth...

Go Digit share price jumps 9% after muted listing

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] After listing at a small premium of 3.35% on BSE in Thursday's trade at Rs 281 over its issue price of Rs 272, shares of Go Digit General Insurance rallied another 9% to the day's high of Rs 305.85. Despite a positive debut, this performance fell short of pre-listing expectations and the grey market premium (GMP) which suggested a potential gain of around 10% as the company's shares traded at a premium of Rs 25 in the unlisted market. “Go Digit's position as the fastest-growing private non-life insurer by GWP in India positions it for continued success in the dynamic insurance market. The company's advanced technology platform and focus on innovation bode well for its future,” said Shivani Nyati, Head of Wealth at Swastika Investmart. Go Digit's moderate listing necessitates a balanced approach from investors. While the company possesses strong long-term potential, careful consideration of the valuation and competi...
