Indian equities edged lower at the open on Tuesday, with the Sensex and Nifty snapping a two-session advance, as foreign investors returned to selling mode and the market grappled with a lack of fresh catalysts ahead of the year-end. The Sensex fell 55 points, or 0.06%, to open at 85,513, while the Nifty 50 slipped 11 points, or 0.04%, to 26,161, with analysts flagging potentially thin trading volumes as the calendar year draws to a close. On the Sensex, losses were led by Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Asian Paints, Tech Mahindra and Eternal, with the stocks declining between 1% and 2%. Broader markets were marginally weaker, with mid-cap stocks down 0.2% and small-caps lower by 0.1%. Ambuja Cements stood out among individual names, rising 4% after the company approved the merger of ACC and Orient Cement, a move the company said could deliver about 10% value accretion for Ambuja shareholders.
