Sensex, Nifty lacklustre tracking weak global cues; IT stocks tumble

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Indian benchmark indices opened flat on Monday, as gains in financial stocks were offset by losses in IT shares, amid weak global sentiment following Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. government’s credit rating on Friday. The BSE Sensex shed 60.79, or 0.07%, to open at 82,269.80, while the NSE Nifty advanced 3.05 points, or 0.01%, to open at 25,022.85. Among the 30-stock Sensex pack, shares of Infosys, Eternal, TCS, IndusInd Bank, HCL Technologies, and Reliance Industries were among the top losers, falling between 0.3% and 1.1%. The decline in IT stocks followed Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. government’s credit rating to AA1 from AAA, citing elevated debt levels and interest costs "significantly higher than similarly rated sovereigns." As IT firms earn a sizable portion of their revenue from the U.S., the Nifty IT index slipped 0.8%. In contrast, the broader markets outperformed, with the more domestically focused Nifty Smallcap 100...

Missiles fly, markets diverge: Why Operation Sindoor turned Karachi stock market red and Sensex green

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] The colour of "Operation Sindoor" was starkly split on trading screens across the subcontinent on Wednesday—blood red in Karachi and calm green in Mumbai. As India launched a tri-services strike on terror hubs across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Pakistan’s benchmark KSE-100 index sank 6%, while Indian equities overcame early jitters to trade higher, signalling investor confidence in domestic fundamentals. The military strike, in retaliation for the deadly April 22 attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, sent shockwaves through Pakistani markets. The KSE-100 index plunged 6,272 points, or 5.5%, to 107,296 in early trade, marking a sharp downturn after India’s surprise Operation Sindoor. In contrast, Dalal Street remained unfazed by the military escalation. After an initial dip, India’s equity markets recovered swiftly. The BSE Sensex rose 166 points, or 0.21%, to 80,802, while the Nifty 50 gained 59 points, or 0.24%,...

Goldman Sachs sees expiry day shift hurting BSE, cuts target price to Rs 4,230

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Global brokerage firm Goldman Sachs (GS) has issued a neutral call on BSE Ltd., revising its target price downward to Rs 4,230 per share, citing potential headwinds from the recent changes in the options market expiry schedule by the NSE. The key concern highlighted by the brokerage is the impact of NSE’s shift in weekly option contract expiry days. Effective January 1, 2025, NSE will move its expiry day to Monday, while BSE’s will be Tuesday, creating an asymmetry in the options market. This shift is expected to negatively affect BSE’s options trading market share, as weekly options expiries drive significant trading volumes. BSE had been gaining ground in the options segment, with its market share in index options premium rising from 16% in December 2024 to 20-22% in January and February 2025. This happened after BSE shifted its weekly expiry from Fridays to Tuesdays. However, the brokerage had anticipated greater liquidity buildup in B...

Will the stock market crash in 2025? Watch out for these 6 risk factors

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] After a historic nine-year streak of positive returns, a wave of optimism has swept over Nifty bulls, with many anticipating another year of double-digit gains in 2025. However, the second half of 2024 served as a stark reminder to new investors of a timeless truth: Dalal Street is far from a one-way ride. The undercurrents of risks are growing stronger as investors will have to deal not only with global headwinds of geopolitical tensions and trade frictions but also the enemy within - slowing domestic growth, elevated valuations and earnings pressure. Bull markets are generally powered by a mix of earnings growth and multiple expansion, the latter often influenced by sentiment and liquidity. But 2024 saw the market being driven more by multiple expansion than by actual earnings growth. As the saying goes, mean reversion is the unyielding rule of markets, and it could make its presence felt in 2025. Here are 6 key risks that could disrupt...

Image

D-Street's record 11-month stock rally is at risk as profits cool

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] India’s stocks have powered ahead in recent months as surging earnings outweighed fears about lofty valuations. That dynamic is at risk with companies forecast to report slowing profit growth. Brokerages predict that companies in the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index will either report flat or low single digits profit gains for the quarter ended September. Earnings may expand at the slowest pace in more than four years, Jefferies Financial Group Inc.’s analysts forecast for their coverage universe excluding oil and gas. The benchmark gauge has dropped almost 3% in October, paring the year’s gains to over 15%. That’s fueling speculation it may have topped out in September following a stellar run, before an exodus of global funds toward China. The earnings slowdown is being driven by weakening consumer spending and increasing commodity prices. “There is a visible loss in macro momentum,” said Rajat Agarwal, an Asia equity strategist at Societe G...

For a secure future, Sebi opts for tighter F&O rules

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Mumbai: Stock traders must shell out more to punt in equity derivatives - and on fewer weekly contract choices than they now have - after the markets regulator introduced a raft of measures Tuesday to curb retail participation in a segment where at least nine out of ten participants have consistently lost money over the past three years. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) Tuesday increased the minimum contract size in index derivatives to ₹15 lakh from the current ₹5 lakh, making options trading costlier. At the same time, it reduced weekly index product offerings to just one per exchange, seeking to curb frenzied speculation among retail traders. "Given the inherent leverage and higher risk in derivatives, this recalibration in minimum contract size, in tune with the growth of the market, would ensure that an inbuilt suitability and appropriateness criteria for participants is maintained as intended," Sebi said i...
