S&P 500, Nasdaq close at record highs, cap best quarter in over a year

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] The S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached record closing highs on Monday, capping their best quarter in over a year as hopes for trade deals and possible rate cuts eased investor uncertainty. Both indexes ended the quarter with double-digit gains. The S&P 500 gained 10.57% during the period, the Nasdaq rose 17.75%, and the Dow climbed 4.98%. The Russell 2000 Small Cap index rose 8.28% in the quarter. Still, the three main indexes posted their weakest first-half performances since 2022, as the uncertainty around trade policy has kept investors wary during the year, with tensions peaking after President Donald Trump disclosed widespread tariffs on April 2. Trade deals with China and the UK have fueled optimism that an all-out global trade war can be minimized, with hopes for more deals to be reached before Trump's July 9 trade deadline. The end of the quarter was also influenced by managers tweaking their portfolios to look more attracti...

Image

Consequently, benchmark indices closed the week near their highs, with the Nifty settling at 25,637.80 and the Sensex at 84,058.90. Sectorally, the market breadth tilted positive with most NSE indices in the green. Breakout or Breakdown? June 30 could set Nifty’s next big move, says Harshubh Shah

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] The Indian equity markets wrapped up the week on a strong footing, with the Nifty50 registering a 2% gain for the week ended June 27, 2025. Bullish sentiment dominated four out of the last five trading sessions, backed by a sharp intraday rally, resilient support zones, and strategic time-based inflection points that aligned well with recent market moves. One of the key supporting signals for the bulls was the continued decline in India VIX, which slipped by 1.6% to close at 12.39 on Friday. A lower VIX indicates reduced volatility expectations and bolsters investor confidence—an encouraging sign heading into the final trading sessions of the first half of FY25. Review: Time + Levels = Tactical Precision In our previous update, we had highlighted June 25 (±1 trading day) as a high-alert reversal window — and the Nifty responded in textbook fashion. Live Events June 24: Nifty opened with a sharp 225-point gap-up and showed high intraday vo...

Nifty breaks out of 31-day consolidation cage. Will stock market hit record high this week?

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] After Nifty broke out of a 31-day long narrow consolidation phase on Thursday’s monthly expiry, bulls are now betting that a fresh all-time high could come in the next few days given FII buying amid favourable global macro set-up, crude oil’s 11% weekly crash, July's historically bullish seasonality, and Trump's trade deal hints. In just four trading sessions, the Sensex has rocketed 2,162 points in a non-stop rally, now sitting less than 2,000 points from its all-time record high. The Nifty has simultaneously climbed to its highest level since October 1, 2024, and needs only 640 points to look past the September peak of 26,277. FII Firepower Ignites Markets The catalyst for this dramatic breakout? Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have returned with a vengeance. FIIs staged a spectacular comeback as net buyers Thursday, pumping in equity inflows exceeding ₹12,500 crore, the highest single-day buying spree in eight months. Th...

Muskets, markets and models: Why AI is the new engine of revolution

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] It began with a “boundary”, unlike with a bang for the Universe. Thousands of years ago, on the banks of the Tigris River, a small group of people did something no human had done before. They built a fence. It was crude—woven reeds and branches—but it enclosed something: wheat, barley, and goats. It marked, perhaps for the first time, something that was “owned”, and not “shared”. The agricultural revolution had begun. Until then, homo sapiens moved with the seasons, living in bands. Agriculture brought stability, and with it, abundance. But it also brought division—those who owned land, and those who worked it. The fence didn’t just mark a field. It marked the beginning of power. Live Events But with ownership came exclusion, and with exclusion came conflict. Once resources could be stored, they could be taken. Raids replaced wandering. Walls replaced kinship. Scarcity was no longer about nature—it was about who held the surplus. The firs...

The bulk of the shares, over 9.4 million, were directed to the Gates Foundation. Additional allocations included nearly 943,000 shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, and 660,000 shares each to three organizations run by his children: the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation. This latest giving round raises Buffett’s total charitable contributions over the years to more than $60 billion. Even after this sizable transfer, Buffett retains...

Dalal Street Week Ahead: Time to exit overheated themes, enter emerging plays

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] After six weeks of consolidation and trading in a defined range, the markets finally broke out from this formation and ended the week with gains. Over the past five sessions, the markets have largely traded with a positive undercurrent, continuing to edge higher. The trading range was wider than anticipated; the Nifty traded in an 829-point range over the past few days. Volatility took a backseat; the India Vix slumped by 9.40% to 12.39 on a weekly basis. While trending higher throughout the week, the headline index closed with a net weekly gain of 525.40 points (2.09%). The breakout that occurred in the previous week has pushed the support level higher for the Index. Now, the most immediate support level has been dragged higher to the 25100-25150 zone, the one that the markets penetrated to move higher. So long as the Nifty keeps its head above this zone, it is likely to continue moving higher. Over the coming weeks, we are also likely t...

Trump says he won't appoint anyone to Fed who doesn't back rate cuts

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he would not appoint anyone to head the Federal Reserve who would not lower interest rates from where they are, setting perhaps the most explicit litmus test yet for candidates to be the next central bank chief to align with his demands for steep rate cuts in order to get the job. "If I think somebody's going to keep the rates where they are or whatever, I'm not going to put them in," Trump said. "I'm going to put somebody that wants to cut rates. There are a lot of them out there." Presidents in the past have complained about the Fed setting interest rates too high for their liking, but Trump has taken it further than any recent U.S. leader in setting a clear expectation for whomever he nominates to be in line with his wishes. Trump, who said rates should be cut to 1% from the current Fed benchmark rate of 4.25% to 4.50%, has repeatedly railed against Fed Chair ...

Wall Street’s booming June is big bet against economy doomsayers

Image
[hfe_template id='11223'] [ad_1] Wall Street is throwing a summer party with markets just closing out their best cross-asset advance in more than a year on receding fears of a global trade war, igniting a buying frenzy in everything from tech funds to junk bonds. With the S&P 500 enjoying its first record since February, it’s the triumph of investor optimism at a moment of high uncertainty around the economy, valuations and government policy — with the White House delivering a Friday surprise by threatening to end negotiations with Canada over a digital services tax. Still, bulls are latching onto signs of cooling inflation and improving consumer sentiment even as jobless claims rise, the housing market stays cool, global trade softens and hopes fade for an imminent Federal Reserve interest-rate cut. Rather than falter, bullish conviction has surged to levels not seen since Donald Trump returned to the White House, powering a lockstep rally across stocks, bonds, comm...
